about

The Antepartum Mixtape, as the name indicates, is a product of pre-birth exploration for Moonrise Collective. Pulling from the sonic palates of Paul Simon, Iron and Wine, Australian forest-rock band Jinja Safari, Copeland, and countless other influences, the three formative songs it contains are creations of 23 year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Patrick Taylor, and were recorded in his home studio. Characterized by tribal eclecticism, this collection of songs was inspired by a single Ethiopian gazelle-hide drum passed down to Patrick by his mother, who lived in Asmara, Ethiopia as a child. It can be heard on the peaceful, almost hypnogogic “Drift into Light, a Dream,” and the highly spiritual “Honey Eater,” spreading out a gentle groundwork of velvet rhythm, over which guitars, synthesizers, penny-whistle, thick bass, and dense vocal harmonies create a vast canopy, like a swaying forest of sound, dreaming of its emancipation into flight. And this sound reflects the expansion to come for Moonrise Collective, whose fluid membership at any given moment may now exceed ten individuals; it's now a growing family of creativity, hoping to spread love and positivity to its eager listeners. Two of these fluid members, Sharon Coffey and Brielle Dennen (the only other instrumentalists on The Antepartum Mixtape besides Patrick), may be heard on “Such Fools in Love,” providing lush violin and cello arrangements, fluttering and flitting around the vocal melodies, weaving a bright tapestry of bittersweet counterpoint. This three-song, developmental demo is an earthy-yet-ethereal exploration of the possibilities of what Moonrise Collective is beginning to call Jungle/Rock/Folk/Pop music. Their eagerly anticipated Moonrise Collective EP will reflect much more of this burgeoning jungle-juggernaut of peace. Let's see where it goes.

Moonrise Collective is a project of singer/songwriter Patrick Taylor, with contributions from friends around the United States. Sometimes it's a childish romp of whimsy. Sometimes it's an island adventure of the human condition at the edges of faith. It is the culmination of daydreams and night dreams. It is an attempt at creating something beautiful. ... more
